A Milton Keynes Firm, Exclusively in Family Law

Purcell Solicitors is based in Milton Keynes. Our office is at The Stables, Brooklands Farm, Newport Road, Broughton, Milton Keynes, MK16 0HU. We advise clients across the city and the surrounding villages on divorce financial settlements, children’s law, and the full range of family matters. Every solicitor in the firm works exclusively in family law.

Milton Keynes is one of England’s most rapidly growing cities. The 2021 census recorded a population of around 287,100, up 15.4% from 2011, and noted that 9.3% of residents aged 16 and over had been divorced or had a civil partnership dissolved. Average property values sit at around £344,000. Many households carry pension wealth built up in financial services, logistics, or public sector careers alongside that housing equity. These are the cases we deal with every week.

We are ranked in Chambers and Partners for family and divorce law, the only specialist family law firm in Milton Keynes to hold that ranking. Our team holds Resolution membership and approaches every case with a commitment to reducing conflict wherever the circumstances allow.

Divorce Financial Settlements

The financial settlement on divorce divides everything accumulated during the marriage: the family home, pension funds, savings, investments, and any business interests. Courts in England and Wales apply the factors in section 25 of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973, starting with the welfare of any child under 18, then each party’s financial resources and needs, earning capacity, age, the length of the marriage, and contributions made.

The landmark case of White v White [2000] UKHL 54 introduced the yardstick of equality, establishing that a homemaker’s contribution carries the same legal weight as a breadwinner’s. The subsequent case of Miller v Miller; McFarlane v McFarlane [2006] UKHL 24 refined this, setting out needs, sharing, and compensation as the three guiding principles. Together these two decisions shape every financial settlement negotiation we conduct.

For Milton Keynes clients, pension division often requires as much attention as the property. We advise on pension sharing orders and pension attachment orders and work with pension actuaries where the case requires it. Our detailed guidance on pensions and divorce is on our website.
